For this particular oil filter, the O-Ring was included.
For the TNT 125 / TNT 135, SKF 135, could remove it and use the oil filter without it, BUT we would highly recommend using the O-ring as it would prevent oil cross contamination and pressure lost. Benelli OEM completely ditched the O-ring, which is why the OEM oil filter doesn't have any.
HiFloFiltro ships the oil filter with the O-ring flat side facing outward. Remove the O-ring from the oil filter and flip it around. This would show the taper side on the outside (see photo with notes), which would allow the oil filter to slide in easier and hold into position.
Without the oil ring, the oil could back flow through that hole because nothing seals it, which could lose some oil pressure and/or cross contaminate the filtered and unfiltered oil.
